Many people today are in a big hurry. They speed in parking lots. They are impatient. They want everything now. They race through life, trying to obtain the next marker and are too busy to notice what life can offer.
Knitting is something that can offer a life long journey. It is something that can continually grow and challenge you. That is, if you are willing to take the journey...
Many knitters seem always in a hurry with their knitting projects. They choose the small easy projects. They claim they love large needles. They don’t learn anything new or think for themselves. They seem scared to tackle something new, different or challenging. Are they really following their own knitting path? Or are they just wanting something finished NOW to show? Or maybe just going through the motions and not wanting to learn as they move along?
Some knitters scoff at taking classes. They believe they cannot learn anything new from any teacher—or anyone. They believe the really talented knitters, teachers, designers live somewhere else. The truly talented couldn’t wander into their local shop. They live somewhere else.
If everyone believed this, where do the talented knitters live? Conrad, Iowa? A place few have heard of buried in snow? Or maybe Staatsburg, New York, and Beijing? Is that where only the truly talented knitter’s knit? Sounds ridiculous? YES, it does!
There are many teachers that can think beyond the lesson, there are teachers that really know their craft. There are teachers that can offer new insight that will bring joy to your knitting. Even the most talented knitter can learn something new......
If they are willing to listen.
And that really talented designer? Well, she could be sitting next to you at that cable class in that small acrylic selling shop in Alabama. Or it may be another classmate that makes a comment or asks a question that leads your brain down a discovery path to follow on your knitting journey. You could just get lucky and meet a new friend…... Sometimes your biggest discovery will come from the most unlikely source. What if it was that really bad teacher in that nothing class, in that nothing shop, that gives you your really big break through?! Oh, My!! Just think of the possibilities!
Your knitting life is something where you can continually learn and enjoy today, tomorrow, next year, next decade. Even a seasoned knitter can learn something from a beginner, a new insight, a new thought, a new path to take to learn if they slow down to look and to listen. Maybe you will learn something new as you give an introduction to advanced knitting patterns to a fellow knitter.
There are no guarantees that come with a journey only the path that lays before you. Only the path you choose to follow. A path has many forks in the road of a never ending journey. A journey that should not be a race to the end.
If you can, I ask that you take a deep breath. Realize that rushing through your day will only make you aggravated. Relax, enjoy what you do each day. Enjoy the journey.
Enjoy your own individual knitting journey.
